Using Spell-Check
Windows
I get a lot of people asking me about how to properly use the spell-check for their computer, so I thought I would devote a little time to discuss the different ways in which you can use spell-check in your e-mails, documents and so forth.

Years ago, even while typing on your computer when you ran across a word or phrase you were unsure of you had to have a Webster's Dictionary handy.

I still remember those days. It was always good, too, to have a whiz in the office that you could yell across the room to for a quick spell-check (I was always that guy they yelled to), which always made for a close and interactive atmosphere in which to work in. Ahh, those days are all but gone...thanks mostly to Microsoft and their Office Suite.

Nowadays, it is almost a lost art to use the good ole' Webster's anymore. Even now while I am typing this I am reminded of any typos I may make with words with a red-dotted line under them (and this isn't a Microsoft application!).

Most programs and I would say 90% or better have some sort of spell-check built into their applications...you just have to know what to look for. Usually when you see a word with some sort of line under it (usually red) that tells you that your word probably needs to be looked at for spelling. Most of the time when you see such a word all you have to do is right-click it and a sub-menu will pop up with suggestions on how to properly spell that word. Sometimes you have to highlight it with your mouse by left-clicking the word and drag it at the same time, then right-click it for any suggestions.

Most e-mail programs, if not all of them now, even have a button to press (which usually says spell-check) that will check your entire e-mail, and as they find a mis-spelled word a dialog box will pop up with any suggestions they may have.

Before you click the spell-check button make sure you click at the beginning of your e-mail or document as that will guarantee that everything will be checked.

Some spell-checkers even have a built-in Thesaurus and maybe even have a list of Synonyms for you to choose from.

Another possible way for you to have quick access to checking your spelling is to use a widget (a mini application) from your browser where you can type in a word and instantly know if you spelled it correctly or not. I am sure that Firefox has one, and I believe that Opera has a widget also. I am not sure whether Internet Explorer has one or not. You may even be able to find one that sits in your system tray (down at the right-hand corner), and by clicking it you have a dictionary immediately at your disposal.

So now the possibilities are endless now that you know what to look for. If you are still having difficulties, please don't hesitate to send me a private message (if you are a member) or an e-mail through our contact form, and let me know how I can be of help. Thanks, and good luck!
