Take The Global Broadband Speed Test...FREE! (I DID!)
|

| Choosing The Right Browser |
There are as many browsers out there as I have room to write this. Often-times it can be difficult to decide which browser to use for the Internet as there are so many to choose from.
Each come with different options and functionalities which make them unique, and everyone will eventually find a favorite. It often comes down personal preference more than anything and what you get used to using.
I have six browsers installed on my system...not that I can't decide which one I prefer (I do have my preference). Since I am running a webserver I need to test my applications with each of the browsers that I think most of my visitors will be using to make sure that they run properly in each of them.
You will find that your preferences will change over time as mine has. In fact, the one that I use now is different than the one that I used six months ago. It wasn't because my preferences changed, but because the browser that I was using changed.
It also depends a lot on what you use your browser mostly for can determine the best browser for you, too. The majority of people either uses Mozilla/Firefox, Opera or Internet Explorer. Google Chrome is beginning to pick up some momentum as well and one in which I like to use as well because of its simplicity and speed. Maxthon is nice, too, but it still has some development to do before it can catch up with the others.
At one time I was a die-hard Mozilla/Firefox fan, and thought that no one could touch it. You can install a ton of add-ins for it, and as far as that is concerned no one can come close to Firefox as their add-ins are the best of the best. But they have changed their targeted audience with their latest release. And as a developer, I can appreciate the change, but as a surfer they lost me. I am sorry, Firefox, but you are leaving behind the majority of folks who just want a program to surf the Internet with.
Their choice to develop a browser geared toward the IT community has opened the doors for the rest to catch up...and that is just what they are doing. Perhaps it was by design, who knows. As a result, Opera and Google Chrome have enhanced their browsers for the majority of users, and that is one for surfing the Internet with speed, speed, speed.
My choice right now is Opera. Opera has everything I need for not only surfing the Net, but also for development of my applications. I was switching back and forth between the two (Opera and Firefox), but got tired of waiting, waiting and waiting for Firefox to do its thing, so now I just use Firefox to test my applications as Firefox will not run anything unless the code is just right. Internet Explorer used to be like that, but I can see that they are changing their strategy as well.
For all of you Firefox fans out there, I apologize, but someone needs to speak out. I think that maybe Firefox right now is trying to do too much, too soon. Whatever the case may be, be on the lookout for Opera and Google to be the next generation of browsers with perhaps Internet Explorer right up there in the mix. I am sorry, Firefox, but you have got to shape up or ship out!
UPDATE:After publishing this, I found myself interested in the development of the Safari browser by Apple, and for the past several weeks have been using it (Safari) more and more...to the point that it is almost exclusively.
You are saying, WHAT? Yeah, I know all of the Apple/Mac cracks. My main reason for using it was because an on-line application would not work with Opera, and kept crashing. I didn't want to fire up Firefox (no pun intended), so my natural choice was either Google Chrome, IE or Safari. I chose Safari.
It is a little different to get used to, and things are not where they usually are, but after taking the time to learn where everything was...it was a breeze. I highly recommend it, but don't choose the server thingy while installing it unless you want it to be linked up with iTunes. Do not expect it to be fancy either with a lot of skins and themes because there is not any at the present.
HAPPY SURFING!
