Something you should know before putting a Calendar on your Site
BugsSure, everybody wants a nifty little calendar to enhance the appearance and functionality of their website. Not that we need to be reminded of what day it is...we all know that.

That is one reason I never bothered putting one on...until now. I discovered a neat little module that functions not only as a calendar, but is also an events calendar. Awesome!

Now I can list all of the upcoming events that are related to the website, plus it also allows my visitors to have a part by inputting upcoming events as well. Birthdays, graduations, bar-mitzvahs...you name it!

In my haste to install and configure it I over-looked one important detail: The Search Engine.

What is usually our life-long friend suddenly became my own living night-mare. When it began indexing the calendar, I thought it was doing its everyday normal thing, but when it kept indexing and indexing and indexing, non-stop, nearly bringing my server down to its knees, I knew something was wrong.

My first response was to place a robots.txt inside of the directory wherein the calendar resided, and when that didn't help, I realized that I should have modified the one in my root directory instead with something like: [Disallow: /calendar_root/calendar_panel/], without the brackets. I also placed a meta tag inside of the main calendar page telling it not to index nor to follow any of the links in the calendar's directory.

I began to notice an immediate difference, but still the search engine hadn't given up. My next step was to shut down the server. Thirty minutes later after restarting the server it had nearly stopped. I did the same thing again, and that pretty much took care of it. Perhaps when the search engine cleared its cache and began its search again it found the changes in my robots.txt.

One thing I discovered is that search engines love calendars...if only they loved our whole site like that we would have it made!

So, before installing a calendar module make sure you either modify your robots.txt in your root directory or place a meta tag on your main page in your calendar's root directory or both like I did, and you shouldn't have any problem.
